Today I would like to share my experience of using Mica powder for polymer clay. With powders, you can get a lot of new effects for your polymer clay products. Beautiful imitations of pearl, shimmer effect, flickering patterns – that’s what we can achieve by using powders.

And in this article, I will tell you a few simple tricks for working with this multifaceted and really brilliant material. We will make together with you polymer clay beads covered with mother-of-pearl powder. And then we will assemble a necklace out of these beads.

Mica powder for polymer clay

To begin with, let me tell you a little bit about what this material is. Mica powder for polymer clay can create an imitation of a metal surface without using metal and all thanks to the flat particles. They evenly lay down on the surface of the polymer clay, creating the effect of a metal coating.

The shine of the coating depends on the size of the particles. The result depends on them: you can see either a light pearly shimmer or a bright metallic shine. Mica powder for polymer clay can be applied to a variety of surfaces: polymer clay, glass, metal, wood, paper or fabric. And you can mix it with almost any composition: polymer clay, oil, acrylic paints, varnish, melted wax and other binders.

First I would like to note a very important thing – when using powders, be sure to varnish your product, so that over time the powder will not wipe off from the surface.
A great advantage of using powders is that using different colors we get different effects on the product: a metallic sheen, pearlescent shine, different colors with shades.
And of course, if you need an original, unusual shade, you can always mix a few colors of powder and get the color you need!

How do you use pigment powder with polymer clay?

The easiest and best-known way to use Mica powder for polymer clay is to apply them to unbaked polymer clay products. This can be done in several ways:
Using a pearl roller (a special roller for rolling beads) – with help of it you can apply powder to polymer clay beads.

Mica powder for polymer clay

If you have a pearl roller and want to make beads with a metallic or pearl luster, you need to pour a small amount of powder on the surface of the pearl roller and “roll” it into the prepared beads.

If you do not have a pearl roller, you can apply a small amount of powder to the bead before baking it and then roll it with your fingers. Remember to work with gloves on to avoid leaving fingerprints on the product.

Metal effect. And here we see a completely different effect – metallic. And that’s because we used a powder of a metallic shade.

Use a brush to apply powder – then give it some texture
The easiest way to apply Mica powder for polymer clay is to use a brush. To do this, simply apply the powder with a soft brush to the surface of the future product, and then apply a texture sheet and get a shiny pattern. In this case, the powder will shimmer differently on the protruding areas, especially if you used duo-colors or interference colors.

Or vice versa: give it some texture first – then apply powder
First, use a texture sheet to form a textured surface, which is then tinted with powder using a soft brush.

You can get a particularly interesting effect if you tint only the protruding parts of the product relief, and the recesses will have the non-toned color. To do this, you need to carefully apply mica powder for polymer clay with your finger to the protruding parts. In this case, take a little powder so that it does not fall into the recesses.
There is also another method that I use.

Then you can bake it in the oven and varnish it.

Mix the powder with the varnish.

You can get an interesting effect if you add the powder to polymer clay varnish.
Find a small container for varnish (you can use any small glass bottle you have on hand, such as a bottle of eye drops). Pour the right amount of varnish into this bottle, add the powder and apply it to the baked item. The more powder is in the varnish and the more contrasting colors of polymer clay and powder, the brighter the effect.

The powder mixes well with polymer clay gel.

You just need to mix the right amount of powder and gel, apply it to the product, bake it and get a brilliant effect.

Mix the powder with the polymer clay.

You can mix mica powder for polymer clay with any colored polymer clay to get a pearlescent color, or add to polymer clay of metallic colors to enhance the metallic effect of polymer clay. And if you mix translucent polymer clay with powder, you will get soft shimmering colors.
Try it, experiment, and your creativity will start shining with new shimmering colors.
