If you’ve been thinking about learning how to make wire jewelry in this technique, but didn’t know where to start, you’ve come to the right place. I will be sure to help you. Getting started with this technique is much easier than it sounds. This technique allows you to create beautiful, one-of-a-kind jewelry. In fact, all you need to get started is a stone, wire and a small set of tools. Let’s start our today’s Wire wrapped jewelry tutorial.

I will tell you about a technique of making jewelry (pendants, necklaces, rings, bracelets, hairpins, etc.) from wire and stones without the use of soldering. Any kind of wire can be used – copper, brass, nickel silver, melchior, bronze, silver, coated wire. Stones in any form can be used – beads, crystals, cabochons, cuts, with or without holes. Glass and plastic can also be used.

As a rule, soldering is not used but is allowed. I myself sometimes solder cabochons. Then I fix the stone and weave it with wire. But this is already a mixed technique.

Weavings are made of wire. This is when several thick wires are weaved with thin wire, creating “patterns”. The weavings are nicely bent around the stones, so that the end result is a gorgeous piece of jewelry.

In today’s Wire wrapped jewelry tutorial we will make a copper wire and agate pendant (with a hole in it). Having a hole in the stone makes it much easier.

Wire and stone to create a pendant.

We will use natural, soft, copper wire with a thickness of 1 mm and 0.4 mm. You can use any other wire of appropriate thickness.

If you are just starting to learn this technique, I recommend that you start with natural copper wire. You can buy natural copper wire in the online store.

For the pendant, I took a natural agate stone. This is a cut, a slice of agate, the edges are rough, untreated. The stone has a hole in which the wire 1 mm thick fits.

You won’t need many tools to make this pendant. A small set of hand tools will be enough. You can buy them at a hardware store. If you can’t find it there, order it online.

I like to use natural wires. They can be twisted, flattened, melted, patinated, sanded and polished. Today I will be patinating and polishing copper wire.

I patinated the copper in ammonia vapor, which you can buy at the drugstore. I pour the ammonia into a glass jar with a lid. I suspend the item ABOVE the ammonia on a wire! After a while, copper will darken. Take the piece out when the copper darkens to the desired color.

For polishing I used a grinder with special felt tips. I also used polishing pastes. A often use them in my Wire wrapped jewelry tutorial.

We need to prepare four pieces of 1 mm thick copper wire of about 50 cm each. You should always have a good supply of thin wire.
Approximately in the middle, start to weave all the wires together in any technique you want.

Bend one wire and insert it into the hole in the stone.

Continue weaving the three wires, bending the weaving around the stone.

When you get to the wire coming out of the hole, first just bend it.

And then weave the four wires.

Continue to weave and bend the weavings over the stone.

Cross the weavings. Sew the weavings together.

Continue weaving one of the weavings in the same way as you did before. Divide the second weaving into two.

Bend the weaving around the edge of the stone.

Do not forget to sew it to the bottom, so it does not dangle.

Bring the end of the weaving to the back side.

On the reverse side, sew the end to the bottom weaving as well.

Cut off the extra length of the ends and bend them nicely on the back side.

Bend the second weaving nicely, too, and bring it to the back side.

Next, we will make a loop for a chain or cord (to make it a necklace).

On the reverse side, divide the weaving into two.

Our task is to “fix” the stone so it won’t dangle.
Weave, cut off the excess wire, sew, and bend the ends nicely.

First one weaving, then the other.
